Ode To My Coffee

[Fonts: Helvetica, EB Garamond, Sears Tower; Digital Kits: Digi Essentials 10, Digi Essentials 11, Cardstock Essentials 2, Clear Essentials 1, Clear Essentials 2 – all by Karla Dudley.]

Journaling Reads:

O coffee, my coffee, how I love thee.

You are always there for me.
When I am weak you are there to strengthen me.
When I am stressed you are there to power me through.

I crave the feeling of time standing still,
after taking long and slow sips
of the sweet elixir.

O coffee, my coffe, how I love thee.

Whan I first saw Karla Dudley’s new kit, Remarkable, I knew that it will be PERFECT to document our ski-moments. As they were truly remarkable…

Check out the new kit by clicking on the kit’s preview image to the left – it’s AWESOME!

Be You – A Blast From The Past

Be You

[Fonts: Adler and Halo Handletter; Digital Kits: mostly “Be You” and the white stitches are from Digi Essentials Elements – all by Karla Dudley.]

Journaling Prompt

Karla Dudley’s new collection Be You has inspired me to look for a picture that can showcase who am I.

I do not have that many pictures of myself, as I am mostly on the other side of the camera… (not such a good idea) but I still have a few laying around. The pictures I have are from different times in my life, so they made me thinking of people and who they are.

People change all the time. They change physically, emotionally, professionally, romantically and in many other ways too.

However, even after a person changes he still carries around with him some of what he was before.

I am not different. I carry with me lots of bits and pieces of what I have been in my life time.

I carry with me an obsession for reading that my 5 year-old self sparked when she started reading on her own.

I carry with me the resilience of my 6 year-old self who overcame a serious illness.

I carry with me passion for fashion and design from my 11 year-old self who wanted to be a fashion designer and draw different outfits relentlessly.

I carry with me the love of writing that my 15 year-old self used when she won two writing competitions.

I carry with me the leadership and responsibility of my 17 year-old self who was the head of her school’s student body.

I carry with me the fear of war and redundant hatred from when my 18 year-old self survived an atrocious murder but my best friend’s sister didn’t.

I carry with me the sense of accomplishment of my 24 year-old self who got her license to practice law after 4 years at the university and a year as an intern.

I carry with me a strong moral campus I got from my 25 year-old self who sought truth and justice and was willing to work 60-hour weeks, sometimes 76… to get it.

I carry with me the joy of tying the knot with my one and only true love, my husband Nadav.

I carry with me the adventurousness of my 27 year-old self who left everything and moved abroad with her husband of 3 months.

I carry with me the ability to cope and adjust from my 28 year-old self who had moved again to another country in another continent, even farther away from home.

I carry with me bits and pieces from every day I have lived on earth and every bit and every piece is making me who I am today.

If You Wish Upon A Star – Digital Video Tutorial

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Kama Chameleon

[Fonts: Adler, Grutch Shaded and League Script; Digital Kits: Wish by Karla Dudley.]

This layout is of my 7 year-old niece and her friends playing dress up.

These pictures remind me how every time I put on a costume (Halloween, anyone…) it makes me feel like I am also getting super powers.

By dressing up as a princess I can also call upon the stars and make a wish.

Have you ever felt that way too?

Anyhow, this is why I thought these photos will be perfect to be used in conjunction with Karla Dudley’s newest kit “Wish”. [UPDATE: Karla’s kit is no longer available, but she offers all the digital patterned papers from the kit as a FREE download on her blog.]

Have you made a wish lately?

If not, now is the perfect time to do so.

Just because.

I also wanted to show you how I used the transparent frames that came with the kit, and more precisely – how I fit the photos to the frames.

You can use the same technique to any transparent digital element that you want to use as an overlay.

Obsessed

Obsessed

[Font: Adler; Digital Kits: Fly Boy, Frame Essentials and Digi Essentials by Karla Dudley as well as You Are amazing, Can’t Buy Me Love and Aged Labels by Shimelle Laine for Two Peas In A Bucket.]

The journaling on my layout describes my obsession quite clearly, here you go:

This stack of books may look innocent on its face, but once you’ll learn all these books are new purchases (the four at the top are from today) you may look at it differently.
I’m obsessed with books.
As you can see my taste is very eclectic. I like many genres and always enjoy a good book to get lost in.
I am currently reading “We The Living” by Ayn Rand and in this stack there are:

  1. The Source by Michener
  2. Outlander by Gabaldon
  3. Never Let Me Go by Ishiburo
  4. The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo by Stieg
  5. Walden by Thoreau
  6. The Portrait Of A Lady by James
  7. By Fire By Water by Kaplan
  8. Hearts in Atlantis by King
  9. She’s Come Undone by Lamb
  10. All Quiet On The Western Front by Remarque
  11. Scarpetta by Cornwell

My addiction is well fed and well nourished.
If only I had more time…

Think Outside The Theme

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I have a ‘thing’. I don’t like themed embellishments and papers.

Whenever I see a spooky house or Hanukkah lights or a Christmas tree or a cutesy airplane – I steer clear.

I guess my ‘thing’ stems from being an obsessive compulsive collector of paper and embellishments. I almost never use up my stash immediately after buying it and I love to be able to use it at any time.

Moreover, I prefer to tell my stories through my journaling and/or my photos and not through the mass manufactured themed design.

But that’s just me…

Lately, I was glad to find out more and more manufacturers who offered “themed” products with design that can work also for layouts outside the theme. For example, I love the kraft papers by My Mind’s Eye and the beautiful French chic papers by Pink Paislee.

Saying that, what I am MOST happy about are entire collections that can work outside the theme. Karla Dudley has released a new kit in a new store – Design House Digital. The kit is a themed kit for Halloween, hence its name: Spook. However, the kit can totally work for any layout, whatsoever, with the natural color palette and fun embellishments.

Here is a layout I created using Spooked:

Sometimes A Title Will Suffice – a Journaling Prompt

Monday, September 27th, 2010

a polka dots kind of day layout

[Fonts: Adler; Digital Kits:Bazinga Mini Kit by Shimelle Laine for Two Peas In a Bucket.]

I am an advocate of the story behind the photos.

Saying that, I also think that sometimes the story can be depicted with just a few words.

Sometimes the title alone will suffice to convey the moment.

This layout is a terrific example. The title is certainly enough (in conjunction with the date and the photo) to bring back the memories from that long day that at the end of it I decided to paint bright yellow polka dots on my nails… Oh, what a day it was.

What memory can you capture with a single title? I would love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment and share with me.

Anyone’s Any Was All To Her – A Story of Hope and Love

Anyone's Any Was All To Her - layout

[Fonts: FFF Tusj, Adler; Digital Kits: Modern Marvel by Karla Dudley for the Daily Digi.]

I love reading poetry. There is nothing quite like the soul of a poet. Delicate and all consuming and it always shines through the words that are always chosen so carefully.

When I recently revisited the words of E. E. Cummings’s poem I couldn’t help but think about my big sister.

My sister’s first born was different than all the other children. By the time he was a year and a half he could already solve simple math problems and by the time he was two, he had stopped speaking altogether. He didn’t point and didn’t sit still but had – and still has – the purest heart I have ever seen.

It is easy to focus on my nephew’s angelic eyes and heart of gold, but when I read the lyrics of Cummings’s poem I thought about the emotional struggles my sister is going through.

She laughs her son’s joy and cries his grief and frustration. But most of all – ANYONE’S ANY IS ALL TO HER!

I can still remember how when he was 4 years old my sister suddenly burst into tears. I had no idea what had made her cry and then she said “He will never say ‘I love you mom'”. I was so overwhelmed by her simple but so profound concern and took it upon myself to teach him these words. I know he loves her dearly, he is a loving person, so I didn’t mind how mechanical these words sound when they came out of his little mouth, and she didn’t mind either. I hope.

It is difficult to understand how difficult it is for a mother of an 11 years old son to be thrilled when he types a full sentence on the computer. It is not easily understandable how an initiation of a simple conversation can yield such immense joy in a mother’s heart. Thus I find that these words “anyone’s any was all to her” depicts so well my sister’s trials and turbulence.

I adore my sister’s strength and endless capacity to love and understand.

The Story

These photos were taken with my husband’s Nexus 1 phone a couple weeks ago.

It was the last day trip we took with my parents before they came back home. We went to San Francisco and enjoyed the beautiful urban landscape and great cuisine.

At the end of the day, as the last rays of sun shone above us we went to Twin Peaks for a marvelous bird eye view. As we climbed higher and higher the wind became almost violent and blew in gusts tight through us but the view became even more amazing.

I am so glad my father had the opportunity to join us for the short climb and enjoyed the extraordinary view of the city. The look on his face was so precious that I still remember and cherish it.
