Guest Post – Snapshots In Time by Monika Wright

December 29th, 2010

Introduction

Hi, I’m Monika Wright and I’m so pleased to be guest hosting here at Creativity Prompt. I have used Avital’s downloads and have even been featured here on the blog before!

I love the fact that I can capture memories in a format that is lovely and pleasing to the eye. While I do create scrapbook layouts, my first love is really the mini-album. I love that I can create little snippets of our family history in a format that is user-friendly…no one minds flipping through a mini whereas it is somewhat more difficult to pull out the 12×12 scrapbook.

Snapshots In Time

A new year is almost upon us, can you believe it? With a new year, it almost always has us thinking of new ways to reinvent ourselves, to make ourselves better versions of who we already are. With that in mind, I’m sharing with you today a mini-book to help you track your progress throughout 2011.

There are a number of options for this lovely little journal and I’d like to suggest a few ways you might want to use the downloads I’ve designed for you. These and other downloads are all available in the sidebar of my blog. I’m using this mini-album kit from my Etsy shop as the base for my journal.

A sweet way to track and remember the monthly milestones of your newborn baby:

Never forget birthdays again! Use these pages as a place to permanently record important birthdates and anniversaries:

Special Offer

I didn’t purchase anything extra for this journal, using items from my stash and the kit from my Etsy shop. If you purchase a kit, please let me know you saw this tutorial on Creativity Prompt and I will include lots of the little extras that you see here in this tutorial, including the four colors of baker’s twine from The Twinery. Thanks so much for letting me share my project with you today and I hope you’ll have an opportunity to stop by to get your downloads {the downloads begin with “month in review” }.

Guest Post – The Story of Our Lives by Bonnie Rose Kempenich

December 27th, 2010

Introduction

I hope each one of you had the best Holiday ever! I’m Bonnie Rose Kempenich of A Life Unrehearsed. I am an artist, passionate blogger, writer, amateur photographer, and card designer – living my best life right now in Fargo, ND. I am growing as an artist, experimenting with new mediums and playing with bright and bold color. Bright colors just make me happy! I am a big believer in sending real mail, the warm fuzzies kind of mail. My goal for this New Year is to grow more as an artist, and to inspire you with my art and my writings. I have so much in store for you!

You can read more about my life and art on my blog. I am a prolific blogger – meaning there is always something new and wonderful to share every day. You can find me on Facebook here. Custom art and card design orders are always welcome! Wishing you all a fabulous New Year filled with dreams come true!

The Story of Our Lives

I love the fact how cameras have gotten so much better over the last few years. They are smaller, take better pictures, and are so much more affordable for everyone. I personally use a small Kodak Easyshare point and shoot camera. It’s my go-to camera, for everything. It’s what I use to take photos of my life.
The people.
The places.
The things.
The art I create.

Art Saves

One thing I love love to do is take photographs of still life.
Sedentary things.
Things that aren’t moving.
Objects.

These tell the story of my life.

Creativity Prompt

I strongly encourage you to write this up in your journal. Think about this. Ask yourself these questions, then take your camera and start taking some amazing photographs. They are there, just waiting –

Art Saves

  • Look around your home, your room, your life.
  • What is there you can capture?
  • Take a close look.
  • Now take a closer look.
  • Point.
  • Shoot.

Share

Post to your online gallery, your blog, or email a friend a few of your images of your world. What do they say about you? Your life at the moment?

Art Saves

Your life is right now. It’s here. Start living.
Start noticing all the little things.

Every image is a snapshot of our lives.
Look around.

And sit in wonder.
And appreciate all that is your life.
Right now.

Coconut Chicken With Peaches And Sweet Potatoes

December 22nd, 2010

coconut chicken recipe

Sometimes when time is short and creativity is looming I resort to cooking.

Even a busy person must eat, must he not?

This is my excuse for using time I don’t have to get creative, even if it’s in the kitchen rather than my craft room.

I look at cooking as a possibility to get outside the box.

I rarely use recipes, and if I do – I mostly alter them significantly.

I pair odd ingredients together, clashing tastes, aromatic fragrances and create a symbiotic dish that sometimes also tastes good…

This time it was a success (hence my consecutive Healthy Kitchen Prompt as I was so excited, I had to share this one with you).

If you are interested, stay tuned (chicken can be replaced with Tofu for vegans or vegetarians).

Coconut Chicken With Peaches and Sweet Potatoes

Serves 4-6 people

Ingredients

  • 2 pieces of boneless, skinless chicken breast – cut into ½” cubes
  • 1 can of light coconut milk
  • 1 can of sliced peaches (no added sugar)
  • 2 sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
  • 1 Tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • cinnamon, allspice, ginger, black pepper, garlic powder and curry powder to taste

How To

  1. Start by sautéing the potatoes with the olive oil and gradually add water as the pan gets dry. (in the meantime cube the chicken…). If you are less worried about the oil intake, you can increase the quantity of olive oil and forget about adding water at this stage, but I prefer to cook light.
  2. Add the chicken and sauté for about 5 more minutes until the cubes turn whitish on all sides.
  3. Add the content of both cans (coconut milk and peaches), add the spices and another cup of water and bring to a boil, while stirring all the ingredients together.
  4. Once it’s boiling, lower the heat to medium to medium low and cover the pan for 20 minutes (or until the potatoes are soft).
  5. Finally, lift the cover, turn the heat to high again and reduce the sauce until it thickens.

Milk And Honey

December 20th, 2010

Milk and Honey

The Story

Whenever I got the common cold and my throat started to bother me, my father would make me a mug of milk and honey.

Sweet, smooth and very soothing.

The milky liquid went down my throat and with each swallow I felt a little bit better.

It was simple but effective. Just what I needed on both a physical and psychological level.

Now, when my father is thousands of miles away and I have caught a cold again, I decided to make one for myself.

Of course I had to “individualize” the simple recipe and make it mine. So I added some spices and some fresh ginger (which also has therapeutic properties) and came up with a big mug of heaven upon earth.

You have got to try it. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients

[for 1 mug]

  • 1 ⅔ cups of milk [I used vanilla soy milk]
  • 1 Tsp of freshly grated ginger [if you don’t have fresh ginger, just skip it. Do not use dried one. It is NOT the same]
  • 1 Tbs cinnamon
  • ½ Tsp clove
  • 1-3 Tbs of honey [depends on how much of a sweet tooth you are. I use 2.]

How To

Pour all the ingredient into a small pot and bring to a boil on high heat. Stir it occasionally while it’s on the stove to integrate all the ingredients together.

That is all.

Heaven!!!

I Have Been Playing And It’s Been Fun

December 15th, 2010

Fashion is another passion of mine. In elementary school I was devoted to becoming a fashion designer, thus sketched clothing items and shoes all day long.

This “set making” tool on Polyvore is a great way to “shop” or feed my fashion cravings without spending actual money.

The image above represents my “weekend cozy” style.

Share

How would you define your “weekend cozy” style? It will be fun to exchange sets or to make one for yourself, print it out and build a scrapbook layout around it, entitled “my style”. What do you think?

Sunrise Stands For The Triumph Of Light Over Darkness

December 13th, 2010

Sunrise

My Impression. My Sunrise

There must be but a couple things more beautiful than a sunrise, but I haven’t seen them yet.
The anticipation in the pre-morning frost is immense.
The teeth are shaking and the entire body shivers with both cold and excitement.
All of a sudden rays of strong red light come out of the thick clouds,
Making them visible in the dark cold black sky.
Already the ridge lights up welcoming the rising sun.
A few more moments elapses and the red rays are accompanied by an orange mist of color.
Almost obscure at first but soon the orange dominates the brave, pioneering red lights.
Then the sky change color to a magnificent cobalt blue.
After some more chilling moments tick past, the vibrant yellow rays are emerging,
followed by a fabulous ball of pure shining gold.
The sun is coming up and sky once again change color to a perfect azure hue.
And without further ado,
let there be light!

What an inspiration are those young first rays of sun that singlehandedly take over darkness.
It only takes one ray to light up half a globe.

Journaling Prompt

I strongly encourage you to brave the cold and the loss of sleep and go watch a sunrise, then write it up:

  • How did it look like?
  • What colors did you spot?
  • What did you feel?
  • Where did you watch the sunrise?
  • With whom did you watch the sunrise?
  • Have you learned anything from your experience?
  • How has the sunrise inspired you?
  • What did you like most about the sunrise?
  • What do you think was the most beautiful moment?

Share

Have you ever watched the sunrise?
