Creativity Prompt – Make A Notebook With A Simple Stapler

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Stapled NotebookBack in the days… when I was a teenager, I remember trying to make shift with the supply I had had. One of the things I remember doing was to open my small stapler and staple with it on a soft, yet firm surface, to overcome not having a staple-gun or a larger and cooler office stapler.

Now it’s the time to use my childhood’s creativity and apply the same trick for making a notebook in less than 5 minutes – no matter what size your stapler is OR what size notebook you want to make. If you are interested in watching how to make it, stay tuned for the video tutorial.

Tools –

Supply –

I embellished my front cover with 3 strips of 1¼” by 5¼” cardstock which I ran through the Cuttlebug machine with 3 different embossing folders (Spots and dots, Swiss dots and Bubbles).

How To Video –

Measurements –

  • Copy paper – 5½” by 8¼” (folded in half, and straightened with a craft knife, while folded).
  • Cardstock – 5½” by 8¾”, scored at 4¼” on each side.

Journaling Prompt – Write YOURSELF A Love Letter

Valentine Day's Card

This weekend, many lovers across the globe are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day. You exchange love notes, maybe some chocolate and flowers with your loved ones – be it your significant other or be it a good friend, a child or an appreciated teacher. But what about being your own Valentine? Have you ever considered it?

Truth be told, the people you love do not need a special day to be loved and appreciated. You’ve got anniversaries, meet-ups, joint celebrations and the everyday life to send cards and small tokens of love and appreciation. With you, however, the situation may be different.

Mostly people do not take the time to love themselves and to indulge in a day of self love, why not make Valentine’s day your day?

For this week’s journaling prompt I suggest you make yourself a nice card and in it you are going to write some loving words to yourself.

By scaling down your journaling to a standard 4¼” by 5½” card, it is going to be less intimidating to find the kind and loving words to fill up your card.

Will you consider being your own valentine?
What kind and loving words can you tell yourself?

Your Eyes Behold The World

“My heart is so small
it’s almost invisible.
How can You place such big sorrows in it?”
“Look,” He answered,
“your eyes are even smaller,
yet they behold the world.”

This week I feel a little bit under the weather… It might be all the boxes that finally arrived from Ireland, or it might be the uncustomary rainy days in the Bay area in California or it might be just a virus I caught… Either way, I didn’t want to leave your Monday without an inspiration prompt, so I am sharing a stunning picture I spot on Flickr and an inspiring quote of the Persian philosopher, Jalal ad-Din Rumi.

Have a great week!

Creativity Prompt – Waterfall Mini-Album

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Waterfall Mini-Album For this week’s Creativity Prompt I have a fun little project for you – The Waterfall Mini Album. It’s a whimsical album that showcases your treasured memories in a playful way.

I have seen a couple of these mini-albums online but non had provided any instructions for assembling it. Therefore I have reversed engineered this album by trial and error with copy paper, until I managed to get it right. It ended up looking nothing like the ones I have seen online, but I love it and I can call it ‘mine’.

Now you can learn from my mistakes and have the full proof way of making your own waterfall mini-album…

Journaling Prompt – Who Am I? Who Are You?

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Who Am I You are a unique person. That much we have establish thus far. But who are you? How do you define yourself? What are your special traits and characteristics that make you so special that there is no one exactly like you? You know they exist. You just need to give it some thought and put it in writing.

I believe that every person has two sets of special traits and characteristics. One that is constant and one is changing all the time. You evolve throughout time and your traits and characteristics evolve with you. You are having new experiences which mold and change you. You pick up new perceptions and new beliefs.

You are changing but also well rooted.

For this week’s journaling prompt I suggest to take a moment and make these two lists. Your constants and your variables. You can also concentrate on just one of your lists.

I wrote about my changing personality and created a layout out of it. You can have a closer look at my journaling here:

Inspiration Prompt – You Are Special

Unique

You are special. There is no one like you. You are unique.

Even someone subject to genetic manipulation is unique, as he absorbs the environment and the experiences he has been through. He is influenced by the sights he has seen. The scents he has smelled. The flavors he has tasted. The textures he has touched and the sounds he has heard throughout his life. He is affected by his friendships and his love affairs. He is inspired by his teachers. This person is as different as one can be from his genes’ donor.

Think about it. If a person who has been genetically reproduced [for the sake of conversation, lets assume it is possible and has been done] is unique, then you are unique as well. Life has carved a person – to whom there is no match!

Live the life of the unique person you are! Do not try to resemble others and respect your authenticity.

Lets get inspired by Dale Carnegie’s words:

You are something new in this world. Never before, since the beginning of time, has there ever been anybody exactly like you; and never again throughout all the ages to come will there ever be anybody exactly like you again.

Kraft no stitch notebook After yesterday’s introduction to the new title on Creativity Prompt: “On The Catwalk” here comes a video tutorial on how to make the notebook, featured on yesterday’s post, using Papertrey Ink’s products.

This notebook is made without stitching and is super easy to make, yet it has this special “artisan” look that we all love. This is the notebook that everyone will ask: “Where did you get it from?”.

So,… Are you ready?

On The Catwalk – Papertrey Ink

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Papertrey InkI hereby introduce a new type of featured posts on Creativity Prompt, titled: “On The Catwalk“.

On these posts I will review different products – both tools and supply – as well as different stores, artists and other creative spots I have been stumbling upon. “On the catwalk” would not be posted on a weekly basis as the rest of the prompts, but only from time to time, as I spot something worth sharing…

Marching proudly on the catwalk this week are Papertrey Ink‘s products.

Overview –

Papertrey Ink is a company offering original photopolymer stamp sets as well as the ink pads, cardstock and ribbons to accompany the stamping (and some other cool tools and supply).

The company is releasing a few stamp sets each month (on the 15th) along with new shades of ink pads, cardstock and ribbons.

This is how their stamp set is packed:

As you can see, minor assembling is needed but their built-in storage solution is fantastic. The clear plastic case is also great for paper scraps’ storage.

Tip –

I find it the easiest to first lay all the stamps down inside the CD case and then cut off the impressions from the index label sheet individually and stick them on the CD cover, behind the matching stamp.

Pros –

  • High Quality – Their cardstock is heavy weight, at 110lb – it is the heaviest cardstock I have come across (apart from specialty artist’s paper which is very expensive). With its smooth texture, the stamped impression is perfect each time. The cardstock also takes heat embossing and water coloring very well. In addition, the sturdiness of the cardstock makes it the perfect for notebook covers (as you can see at the picture above.)
The vellum is extremely high quality and can be made into a card by itself, as you can see below:
    Vellum Card
[Click on the photo above for a larger size]
Their stamps are very durable and gives clean impressions.
Also their ink pads (by Palette) are excellent too. The ink dries quickly and the light opaque ink-pads give a strong impression on darker colored surfaces.
  • Great use of the transparency of the stamps – The stamps’ design is very imaginative and the transparency of the stamps is well incorporated into it. The stamp sets are nestable, thus allow you to customize and adjust your stamped image with layering.
  • True Match system – Papertrey Ink is offering matching cardstock, ink pads and ribbon for a perfect coordination.

Cons –

  • Price – The stamps are on the expensive side, at 24 USD per set (some smaller sets are sold at 15 USD and the mini ones, that compliment the bigger sets are sold at 5 USD). You can rest assured I would have bought each and every stamp set, had it not been so expensive.
  • Shipping – I am a true fan of Papertrey Ink’s products, which makes me more susceptible to delays. It took about 15-20 days for me to receive the products (in California) after making the order. I wanted to play with my new stuff much sooner… On the other hand, they offer a flat rate price for shipping (to continental US) and free shipping on orders above 55 USD (to continental US).
  • Release agent – Some of the stamps might have a release agent residue on them, which can interfere with your stamping. On the information leaflet that comes with the stamp, they advise to erase the stamps with a pencil eraser… After getting the residue off, the stamps are perfect.

This is my current Papertrey stash:

I am planning on increasing this stash, significantly… (as my budget allows)

This review is unsolicited. I paid for the products I was reviewing here in full.

No stitch notebook
Stay tuned, as tomorrow I am going to post a video tutorial on how to make this notebook using Papertrey Ink’s products.

Journaling Prompt – Tell me What Are Your Pet Peeves And I’ll Tell You Who You Are

Pet Peeves

Every person has his or her pet peeves. I am talking about a minor annoyance that seems innocent at first glance but pretty soon makes you want to pull your hairs out.

When I am talking about pet peeves I am referring to those small things that drives you crazy, but no one else gets it. You can look at something, all annoyed and mad and a very poor* bystander would be clueless as for what are you fussing about.

*[This bystander isn’t the luckiest on earth as you are about to throw a tantrum at him]

I HATE injustice, lies, racism, chauvinism, hatred and such – but these are not pet peeves. These are common evils (which are, unfortunately, widely spread across the globe).

Saying that, I also HATE when someone leaves the dishes’ scrubbie inside the sink. It drives me c-r-a-z-y. It changes the way I look at that poor person from that day on… It’s totally insane, I know – this is why it is one of my pet peeves.

For this week’s journaling prompt I ask you to make a list of your pet peeves. Make your little (or rather long…) list of goofiness and let your gran-grand-children a glimpse to your inner world. A sneak peek into the small details that no one is ever going to know about you, unless you share them with the world.

What are your pet peeves? Leave a comment and share your quirkiness – I did…

[I bet I have the weirdest pet peeves ever]

Inspiration Prompt – Do The Impossible

Monday, January 26th, 2009

“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible”
© Arthur C. Clarke

Impossible

Back in law school I remember how we were all excited to get back our first paper in Criminal Law. One of the toughest classes. We were all shocked and highly disappointed to find out the highest grade was a ‘D’. How could that have happened? How could we ALL have gotten it wrong? We were pretty angry (as lawyers to be can get… Oy vay.)

The week after, there was a commotion in class. We were ready with the latest laws and court rulings to prove ourselves right. The professor came in, gave one look at the mountain of papers we had accumulated and said: “Do you know what is your mistake? You were all following the law. This is not the way the law can evolve and change. This is the way to keep the law stagnant. If you want a change – you should think farther. You should use your minds and imagination and take a step forward – where no one has stepped before”.

I loved her speech and it made getting a ‘D’ ok, because I had learned a valuable lesson – much more important than the basic potential defenses an accused has and definitely more important than a grade.

This lesson goes far beyond being a good lawyer – it is a lesson for every person who seeks a change.

This week’s inspiration prompt is to make a change by going farther and find a way to do the impossible.
