Inspiration Prompt – Remember & Never Forget

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Holocaust Commemoration

Today is the Holocaust Memorial Day. 71 year have passed and we still remember. 71 years have passed and we shall never forget.

My grandmother had lost her beloved fiance. My grandfather his wife and 5 year old daughter that was shot against his own unbelieving and crying eyes. Eyes that have seen much horrors in Auschwitz later on. My grandparents on my father’s side were expelled from their own home with 2 little babies and my grandfather got sent to a labor camp, leaving my grandmother and aunts alone.

I have recently read the book “Night” by: Elie Wiesel. I strongly recommend anyone who has not read this book before to read it and to spread the word to others. It is essential to learn and never forget the ungodly horrors which were Mr. Wiesel and my late grandfather’s awful reality for several years.

Reading the book “Night” has given me my first heart shattering glimpse at what my late grandfather, of blessed memory, had been through while walking in the valley of the shadow of death.

My grandfather had chosen to be silent and until reading this book I didn’t fully know the extent of his suffering. I still cannot fully understand, no one can – unless one sees the death in his own eyes and feel the torture on his own skin and on the bodies of his loved ones.

My grandfather had remarried after the war and started a new family. He gave life to my mother and uncle, after he had lost his 5 years old daughter who was shot and his wife who had been destined to the crematorium. When my grandfather had left the camp he weighed 83Lb. A grown man whose life were not valued because of his Jewish descent.

My grandfather had chosen to stay silent. God knows what nightmares had flooded his nights every day. God knows what sights had reemerged in front of his eyes every time he was slipping away into daydreaming. Still he had chosen to stay silent. He had chosen to keep his perpetual smile on and to always have some chocolate in his pocket to hand over to children at the park.

By reading “Night” my grandfather’s silence has been broken for the first time. I am overwhelmed with grief and sorrow and with rage.

The author of “Night”, Elie Wiesel has received the Nobel prize for peace and said we must not be indifferent for the suffering of other human beings. We must not be neutral, as being neutral only serves the oppressors. We must never forget and take a pledge upon us: “NO MORE”.

This book isn’t easy to read. It is more difficult when you know and understand it isn’t fiction but a document of recent history. It is unbearable when you know you are reading about what your own grandfather had gone through.

This inspiration prompt might burden on your day, I am sorry. Nevertheless, I strongly believe it is important to get inspired by awful memories as well. A memory of an horror that has recently occurred might keep humanity from re-occurrences…

Let us pray together a simple prayer: Our Lord, Please, No More.

Creativity Prompt – How To Make An Oval Felt Mini-album

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Felt Mini Album
Surprisingly felt costs less than cardstock. How strange is that? Michael’s offers letter size pieces of felt in many vibrant colors for only 30 cents a piece. Regardless of its price, felt adds so much more to a project than a simple piece of cardstock. It adds softness, texture, cuteness and a dash of “je ne sais quoi” that makes everything better.

For this week’s creativity prompt I teach you how to make this cutest little felt mini album. If you feel like making one, stay tuned and keep on reading.

Tools and Supply

How To

Music by josh Woodward

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Cut from your cardstock 1 big oval and 5 ovals which are ¼” smaller then the first one. The big oval will be used as a template for your felt pages and the smaller ones will be used to support the felt pages and make them more durable.
  2. Take your largest oval and lay it down on your felt. Trace around it with a marker. You will need 10 felt ovals for a 5-pages album.
  3. Cut your felt ovals out.
  4. Note: for the sake of this tutorial, I have skipped this step – which is the main one => Now it’s time for you to create your beautiful felt album pages. Make use of the felt’s special qualities. Embroider on it. Sew your pictures and patterned paper onto it (just pierce them first with an awl). Add buttons, flowers and other pieces of fabric with a needle and a thread. Be creative!!! All the back stitches will be covered in the next step.
  5. “Sandwich” each 2 felt pages with 1 cardstock “core”. Adhere the felt pages temporarily with a tape runner.
  6. Sew all around the edges of the felt “sandwich”. Make sure you don’t sew through the cardstock.
  7. As you will not be able to conceal the edges of your embroidery floss, thread them through a button and tie in a knot. this way you can secure your stitching and add a decorative finishing touch at the same time. (Tip: Add a tiny bead of diamond Glaze to your knot to prevent it from fraying later on.)
  8. Punch a hole at the top of each oval “sandwich” and set an eyelet in it. The crop-a-dile works the best. (as you can see on the video, I was trying to use a Provo Craft’s eyelet setter too and it was too hard to poke through the 3 layers of felt and cardstock).
  9. Thread your ribbon (or book binding ring) through the eyelets (Tip: Cut the ends of the ribbon in a sharp angle to make the threading easier), make a cute knot and enjoy your fuzzy mini-album.

Journaling Prompt – Write About Your Beauty

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

BeautyIt is extremely rare that I feel beautiful. A couple days ago it happened. I was preparing for Passover eve’s service and something in the anticipation and the preparation, doing my hair, applying make-up, dressing up, wearing jewelry and high heels, everything together had made me feel momentarily beautiful.

You may think it’s vain. Maybe it is. But I believe that feeling beautiful is important. I envy those who feel beautiful more frequently. I aspire to do so myself.

Sometimes the beauty comes from within. An aura of love and happiness is flooding you and you feel beautiful. Sometimes beauty is obtained by external accessories. I don’t think it matters. What matters is that you FEEL beautiful.

Whether the looks I spy are looks of admiration or of mockery, so be it – as long as I feel beautiful.

I used to think that as a feminist women I should always emphasize my wits rather than my beauty, but I have discovered that man love to strut just as much. “Big-shot” male lawyers are wearing suits and ties and diamond cuffs to help them feel more confident (or more dominant, more successful) – why should us women be denied of that feeling of accessorized confident?

Confucius had once said:

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

For this week’s journaling prompt I want you to not only see your beauty, but also to write about it. Grab a pen and your journal and write: “Today I looked at the mirror and felt BEAUTIFUL, because…”

Writing your feelings helps you validate them, and I want you to validate your sense of personal beauty. What makes you feel pretty? Is it a new hair do? Is it exercising and eating sensibly? Is it a glow of happiness? Are you shining because you are loved? What is it? Write it down.

To sum up this journaling prompt I want to share a quote by Peter Nivio Zarlenga:

Beauty is being in harmony with what you are.

Inspiration Prompt – Observe The Beauty That Surrounds You

Monday, April 13th, 2009
Beauty

We are all beautiful people living in a beautiful world. Often the beauty evades us, both our personal beauty and the beauty of our surroundings. On these days we look at the blue sky and can only see a gray veil.

The blue sky, the colorful flowers, the songbirds, the fresh air, our beautiful reflection – they are always going to be there for us. They will keep smoldering and will be waiting for us to take notice.

The beauty is always there, it is our eyes that need to wear the right glasses and watch.

For this week’s inspiration prompt I urge you to take notice and open your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson had put it so beautifully:

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is god’s handwriting.

Creativity Prompt – How To Make a Mini Album Case

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Mini Album Case It has been a while since I last designed a free template for you guys. Now it’s time to hone my limited Photoshop and reverse engineering skills and provide you with another free template. This time a template for a mini album case.

This case is perfect for a 3″ by 3″ album, for those important pictures you want to always carry with you in your bag…

I created an album, made out of 3″ by 3″ laminated cards, featuring the early days with Nadav – long before we even thought about getting married πŸ™‚

If you feel like making a similar mini-album, or you have some other ideas for this cute little case, then stay tuned and keep on reading.

Tools & Supply

How To

[You can watch the video in HD on YouTube. While you’re there please rate & comment πŸ™‚ ]

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Download the templates by clicking on the link at the supply list above and print the case template on cardstock and the lining template on a patterned paper. Make sure the printer’s settings are set to a letter size (8½” by 11″) and to borderless printing. Print on the back side (the smooth side of a textured cardstock and the wrong side of your patterned paper), so the lines won’t show on your finished project.
  2. Cut along all the solid lines with a craft knife and a ruler. Be careful not to cut any of the dashed lines. Finish off the curved parts with scissors, it’ll make a smoother cut along the curve.
  3. Score all the dashed lines with a stylus and a ruler.
  4. Fold all your score lines (You can use a bone folder for that).
  5. Cut along the solid lines of the lining template. You can use either scissors or a craft knife, whatever is closer you feel more comfortable with.
  6. Score along the dashed lines on the lining template and fold your score lines.
  7. Adhere your lining to the case template – make sure you are concealing the printer’s lines, which means your positioning is correct. Don’t be shy with your adhesive and apply a generous layer, especially on the edges and the score lines.
  8. Apply a strong adhesive tape to the small flaps and on the long flaps, on the right side of the template.
  9. Assemble the case and voila, it’s too easy πŸ™‚

Few pointers regarding the mini album –

  1. Cut your cardstock to 3″ by 3″ squares (1 sheet of cardstock makes 16 squares).
  2. Adhere your photos and journal on the back.
  3. Laminate all your squares and cut the excess laminating material off.

    • Usually this type of albums gets handled often, not to mention it’s tossing and turning in your bag all the time. The laminating helps to keep the album more durable.
    • Use only flat elements on your cards so the lamination goes smoothly.

Journaling Prompt – Your Freedom (and a $50 Gift Card Giveaway)

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009
Freedom

Today is Passover’s Eve. The Jewish people are celebrating their freedom. I think it is a great opportunity to explore our freedom today. To think what makes us “free” or what do we need more (or less) of in our lives to set us free.

What freedom do we seek? Is it financial freedom in the current recession? Is it freedom of love? Freedom of thought? Freedom from an oppressive workplace?

What tools do we need in order to obtain our desired freedom? Do we need some more courage? Do we want some less responsibilities? Do we need to take an initiative and leave or maybe to regroup again?

For this week’s journaling prompt lets explore our freedom or our yearning for freedom.

  • Do you feel you are living your life as a free person?
  • What aspects in your life makes you feel free?
  • How would you define your freedom? What does being free means to you?
  • In which facets do you feel deprived of your freedom? What would you like to change? What can you change right now?
  • Where do you seek your freedom? (Finance. Romance. Friendships. Traveling. Education. Career. Family. Art. Religion. Nationality. Physical abilities.)
  • What traits can help you become more freestanding?
  • What traits do you already have to assist you in finding your freedom?
  • Describe a life absent of any constraint. How would living those life feel like?

Inspiration Prompt – Is Freedom Manifested By Choice?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

In the coming Wednesday I will be celebrating Passover’s eve. Basically we are celebrating the release of the Israelites from the ancient Egyptian’s slavery. Sadly, the Israelites were not the only enslaved people. All through history – and in the present time as well – many people are enslaved by other people.

Penal servitude is an obvious situation where a person loses his human rights, but there are so many other kinds of servitude. For example taking the right to vote or the right to obtain higher education from a person also hinders his freedom.

For this week’s inspiration prompt I would like you to ponder along with me whether freedom by itself can be enslaving? An interesting notion to get our wheels rolling up there…

In Nineteen Eighty Four George Orwell describes an extreme situation in which slavery is considered freedom. In this book it is a corrupted slogan, but perhaps some aspects of it are true?

Psychologist Barry Schwartz is suggesting that perhaps more is actually less and maybe freedom is not manifested by choice, but to the contrary. I have recently listened to his fascinating talk on TED and would like to share it with you and hear your thoughts about it:

Creativity Prompt – How To Use Those Paper Scraps

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

How To Use Those Paper Scraps If you are anything like me then you probably have a ton of paper scraps. The scrapbooking industry keeps on wowing us with delicious patterned papers and I feel bad about throwing away any tiny little cut out… Not to mention the environmental repercussions of tossing all that paper (read: severed trees) away.

I have found a great “marriage” between my current stash of paper scrap and patterned paper which is still on my wish list. I have derived inspiration from the wonderful new collections from Sassafras Lass and recreated my own patterned paper design, while using only paper scraps.

Sassafras Lass I was particularly inspired by the “Dream Big” patterned paper from the “Anthem” collection.

So if you are interested in recreating this layout while using all your little paper scraps – stay tuned and keep on reading:

Supply –

How To –

[Go to YouTube to watch the video in HD and feel free to rate, comment and subscribe]

Step By Step Instructions –

  1. Take a piece of scrap paper (I used recycled newsprint paper) and cut it to the size of your desired design. Mine is 8″ by 8″.
  2. Cut a circle from your scrap piece of paper. It doesn’t have to be centered. Just position it whenever you’d like your focal picture to be.
  3. With a pen and a ruler start drawing your design.
  4. After you are pleased with your design, list all your individual shapes by number, this will make your life much easier later on.
  5. Cut each individual shape with your scissors. Don’t worry about the curvy part, as your focal picture would lay over it.
  6. Now it’s time to get all your paper scraps. Use as many or as little textures, colors and patterns as you like.
  7. Adhere each individual shape to the back of your paper scrap. Make sure the number faces down (just apply your adhesive to the number itself, to avoid “mishaps“). Don’t forget to rewrite the number again at the back…
  8. Using those numbers, reassemble your design and adhere all the individual shapes onto your background cardstock.
  9. Adhere your focal picture with foam adhesive. The photo doesn’t have to be circular. I just think it adds some extra flair. (You can crop your photo with a photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, or you can use any circle cutting system you feel comfortable with).
  10. Add your title and call it good (Well, except for some journaling).
