Creativity Prompt – Create For A Cause

Friday, September 4th, 2009

The best kind of philanthropy is the one that comes right from the bottom of our hearts. An act of kindness that stems from the deepest and most pristine part of our hearts (souls/social conscious – whatever you believe in).

Therefore the best way to reach out is to combine something we are very passionate about, something we do as a hobby, with the act of kindness.

For us, creative people, making an handmade token of love to someone in need of either love or the handmade item – mostly both – is a fabulous way to reach out. I encourage you to go ahead and do so..

Someone needs love and you have lots of love to give.

Someone needs a cheerful card, and you have cheerful greetings to send.

Someone needs to commemorate a memory, and you have the story telling skills.

Someone need a warm hat or quilt and you have knitting needles, a few woolpacks and the will to help.

Here are a number of charity options to leverage your talent and love for everything handmade to the benefit of someone in need:

  • Cards for Kate Card Drive – Jennifer Mc’Guire who organizes many card drives is now running one to cheer up 5yr Kate and her family. Wee Kate Mc’Rae was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain cancer and she, along with her family, are struggling against it. Handmade (or store bought) cards with words of love and encouragement WILL HELP. Deadline: October 1. For more details go to Jennifer’s blog (She also offers fabulous giveaways for the participants).
  • Project Butterfly – The Holocaust Museum in Houston, TX is planning an exhibition to commemorate the 1,500,000 innocent children that had perished during the Holocaust. They wish to collect 1.5 Million handmade butterflies, sized 8″ by 10″. You can really let your creativity loose for this wonderful cause of immortalizing the children’s memory. Deadline: June 30, 2011 For more details you can go here.
  • Cards For Heroes – Whether you support the military action or not, one thing is in consensus: the deployed soldiers who are risking their lives need and deserve your support. This wonderful organization collects (only) handmade cards and send them to the deployed soldiers. they constantly need more cards. For more information check out their website.
  • Stitches From The Heart – An organization which collects hand knit and crochet hats, booties, blankets, and sweaters for newborn and premature babies. For more information, check out their website and click the “How Can I Help” button.
  • Warm Woolies – This non-profit collects hand-knitted sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks and send them to poverty-stricken children around the world to help them warm up during the cold winter. For more information check out their website.

There are many more opportunities to help out there. Just search Google for “cards for a cause”, “creating for a cause” “scrapbooking for a cause” and find out more charity options, perhaps some are more suitable for you. If you are not from an English speaking country, try to run the search at your native language for opportunities near home.

Journaling Prompt – Paint a Self Portrait With Your Words

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Paint a Self PortraitMany strong and capable women squinch to the thought of having their photo taken. There are many reasons for that reluctance. The two most common reasons are fear of being perceived as vein and self absorbed and inability to think about ‘self’ and always concentrating on others.

Due to the same misconceptions you may find layouts about your significant other, children, grand-children, close family, heritage but either very few or more often none about yourself.

Same goes for journaling. You write about your family, friends, your day but you seldom write about yourself in a documentary manner. You seldom (or never) describe yourself and document the “dry” facts about yourself and your own history.

Why not changing this RIGHT NOW?

To embark on your autobiographic mission start by painting a self portrait with your words.
Describe yourself as you are right now:

You can concentrate on physical traits, characteristics, actions or all the above. You may write in the first person or the third person. Past tense or present tense. With or without adding any background. Just start, then go on.

She sat against her blinking white screen. Her mahogany hair was clasped back with a couple of black bobby-pins. A number of unruly curls had broken through the thin metal prongs.

Her somewhat long and slim fingers ran frantically across the keyboard racing with her blazing mind. She was desperately trying to catch up with the downpour of thoughts and beating waves of self awareness.

Her green eyes opened widely amazed at what the broken dam yielded. Every freckle and each mole suddenly assumed a role in making her the unique being she is, differing her from any other person in the universe.

She took comfort in concealing herself under thick masks of anonymity but that day, a glimpse of realization had made her take a peek inside and the view was overwhelming.

The winds of change had taken her by surprise and she grieved everything that was lost forever, not even caught by ink. She promised herself she would linger no more.

Inspiration Prompt – Life Happens

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Me in Las Vegas - Life Happens I think that this life lesson fits perfectly with my two months absence form Creativity Prompt. No matter how well or how badly I plan – life happens eventually.

At first I wanted some time off so I can get ready for my first workshop “Capture Your Dream“. But even after the workshop started and went on fabulously, I still needed some more time to recollect my thoughts and find my focus again. In other words, life happened.

I will soon reopen the registration for the workshop, as a self-paced workshop and I am also going to reveal a few more workshops in the coming months.

In the meantime, Creativity Prompt will resume its regular schedule of an Inspiration Prompt each Monday, a Journaling Prompt each Wednesday and a Creativity Prompt each Friday.

Going back to regular posting after a long pause isn’t easy. This quote by Philip Gulley has inspired me to do so:

Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for roots that reach deep into the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be swept asunder.

To that I will add these three pointers – that has been helping me time and again:

  • Breathe. The long pause has fed the monster of self doubt and self criticism and it planted fear and overwhelmingness inside us. A deep breathe will cleanse the poison and calm us down.
  • Lose the negativity. After we have washed away the toxicity we should take care of the monster’s long arms: shame, fear, high expectations and perfectionism. We can banish those calamities by filling ourselves with belief, self acceptance and permission to simply be.
  • Find focus and thrill. Our body is clean and is radiating with positivity. Now is the time to take a moment, contemplate. Find what drives us. Rekindle our passion and focus on everything that is good about our path which we came back to and started striding on again.

Creativity Prompt – How To Make a Dryer Sheet Flower

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Drier Sheet FlowerThis week’s creativity prompt is more of an idea on how to reuse drier sheets after they have made your laundry smell fresher and become softer. You know how much I love recycling, so this project is right up my alley.

It takes merely seconds to make this flower and it has a fabric-like texture. Think of it as a tissue paper that won’t rip.

The added bonus of the drier sheet is that even after it does its job inside the drier machine, it still holds its smell. That means that you are not only adding cuteness to the project but a scent too!

Tools & Supply

How To

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Cut 3 circles out of the drier sheet, freehand.
  2. Crumple the circles for some added texture.
  3. Add color by rubbing ink directly onto the circles. If the ink pad falls off, no worries. Stick it right back with a glob of Diamond Glaze.
  4. Cluster the circles together and adhere with Diamond Glaze – a dot of glue will do. (dry adhesive, like a tape runner or glue dots will not work)
  5. To finish off the look, thread an embroidery floss through a button and adhere to the top circle with another dab of Diamond Glaze.
  6. Let dry. After the adhesive has dried up and hardened, you can go ahead and attach the flower to the project with a glue dot. (Position the glue dot directly on the hardened adhesive).

Journaling Prompt – Summertime: Compare and Contrast

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
Summer time, Compare and Contrast

Some things never change in the summertime. The sun is shining (well, in some places more than in others). The weather is warmer. Sweet summer fruits are ripening. Swimsuits are hung on stores’ displays and there’s a special smell – a summer smell – in the air.

Some things, however, do change over the years.

Nowadays summer means slathering on sun protection lotions with SPF 70, whereas years ago it meant frying up your skin at the beach all day long trying to absorb vitamin D.

When you were young the summer meant a long 2-months vacation whereas later on in life you start budgeting your vacation days throughout the year.

While summer means “fun time” to a kid – it also means hearing “i’m bored” 10,000 times per day, i.e: not so fun, to a parent.

While summer once meant becoming a couch-potato, it now means adventurous hikes and long bike rides (or vice-versa…).

Some things change and some things remain the same.

For this week’s journaling prompt write what the summer means from at least two different points of view.

Some points of view to consider: [all relate to age and time]

  • What it means to you vs. what it meant to your parents when they were your age.
  • What it means to you vs. what it means to your kids.
  • What it means to your kids now vs. What it meant to you as a kid.
  • What it means to you now vs. what it meant to you as a kid.

In which two different perspectives do you see the summertime? Leave a comment and share 🙂

Inspiration Prompt – Don’t Quit

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Inspiration Prompt - Don't QuitOftentimes embarking on a new journey, especially when taking the road less traveled, incites apprehension and fear. After the first curve in the road when the start point is already hidden and the final destination is far from being seen the anxiety worsens and the tension increases.

With each hurdle a wee bit of the initial motivation gets lost and after a few more of these bumps-in-the-road the motivation may be decreased to a faint mumble.

This is when thoughts about quitting are starting to afloat.

In this week’s inspiration prompt I suggest instead that we stop, take a gulp of air and recall what was it that sent us running in the first place? What led us to the starting point? What made our heart pulse faster? What made us smile? What made us believe in our journey?

To inspire you to continue your journey I want to share a video by Anthony Fernando:

Creativity Prompt – Capture Happiness Through The Lens

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Capture Happiness Through The LensThere are many ways to tell a story with our design and with our journaling. However the story telling begins while we stand behind the camera and capture a still moment. The lighting, the angle, the composition all take part in portraying our story.

I have not yet included a photography prompt on Creativity Prompt, but I plan on including many more. Please let me know what you think about it!

This week’s photography prompt is to take a photo that conveys happiness.

I took this photo of my niece, Tsuf, last November while I was visiting home. Let me count the ways this photo communicate “happiness” to me:

  • It reminds me of my visit back home. Being with my family always means happy times for me.
  • This photo also helps me remember how delighted my niece was to see me after a long period of time I had been away (…and now it’s been even longer). When I look at her in this picture I recall the warm hug and the soft kiss she gave me a few minutes before when she entered my parents’ house.
  • Looking at my niece with her broad smile, dancing and having fun in the middle of my parents’ living room reminds me of me at her age – just looking for ways to have fun and be happy. The happiness of children is always the brightest!

Please link to your happy pictures – either leave a comment here, use the contact form or start a new thread on the Creativity Prompt Flickr Group!!!

I’d love for you to share your happiness.

Journaling Prompt – Consider Your City As A Prime Vacation Destination

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
Consider Your City As A Prime Vacation Destination

Summer is officially here and we are daydreaming about the perfect destination for the perfect summer vacation.

Guess what? Any destination you pick up, any exotic place you are dreaming to visit, has locals that reside there all year round and call it home. Pretty desirable, don’t you think?

Now that you’ve been pondering about all those lucky people living in a magical country/state, think for a minute about your own city and state. You also reside in a place where occasionally people come to on their vacation.

For this week’s journaling prompt try to think about your own city (or village…) and your own state (or country) as a prime vacation destination.

  • How would you describe your city to a tourist?
  • What are the greatest attractions in your town?
  • Which are the most beautiful places to visit?
  • Which are the best restaurants?
  • Where is the best place to do some recreational shopping?
  • Where is the ultimate hiking trail?

Take your journal and a pen and answer those question. Become excited with everything your own city and state has to offer and create important documentation for your posterity…

Share

What do you love most about your city – (and which city are you coming from)? Leave a comment and share your local-loves.

Inspiration Prompt – Life’s Teachers

Monday, June 29th, 2009

For this week’s inspiration prompt I want to share a beautiful quote by Charlotte Joko Beck:

“Life always gives us
exactly the teacher we need
at every moment.
This includes every mosquito,
every misfortune,
every red light,
every traffic jam,
every obnoxious supervisor (or employee),
every illness, every loss,
every moment of joy or depression,
every addiction,
every piece of garbage,
every breath.

Every moment is the Guru.”

Truly inspiring!!!
